When the Energy Stops: Understanding Kundalini Blockages

A lit candle sits beside a smooth bowl, accompanied by reflective, motivational text about stillness and listening to your soul.

Let’s be honest, talking about Kundalini isn’t always straightforward. It’s become one of those buzzwords people throw around without really understanding what it means, or what it actually feels like when things stop flowing.

Some people think once you’ve had an awakening, it’s all uphill. Like the energy rises once and you’re suddenly floating on a cloud of insight forever. That’s not how it works. The energy can stall. It can loop. It can go quiet. You might even wonder if it left you.

It didn’t. But it does respond to where you're at: physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. If you're feeling disconnected or like your practices aren’t hitting the same way, it's not a sign that you’re doing something wrong. It might be a sign that something deeper needs attention.

Let's talk about that.

What Is Kundalini, Really?

Kundalini isn’t just a serpent at the base of your spine or some abstract cosmic current. It’s life force. It’s the spark in you that knows how to evolve. When you’re aligned, you feel it. You might not always have words for it, but you know it when it’s moving.

It’s not always dramatic. Sometimes it’s subtle, like a quiet shift in perspective, or the way your body feels when you're fully present. And other times, it feels like your whole system is lit up and everything is connected.

But when it's not moving? That’s when people start to doubt themselves. They wonder what they did wrong or if they “lost it.” You didn’t lose it. You just hit a blockage.

Why Does Kundalini Stop Flowing?

Kundalini doesn’t disappear. It gets stuck. More accurately, you get stuck. And that’s not an insult, it’s just the truth. Life happens. We carry trauma, stress, and patterns that don’t serve us. All of that shows up in the body and the energy field. Here are a few common reasons why things slow down:
  • Low Vibrational States
Emotions like fear, anger, grief, and anxiety create dense energy in the body. This can make it harder for Kundalini to rise. Think of trying to float through molasses; that’s what heavy emotional energy can feel like to your life force.
  • Physical Blockages
Trauma and tension don't just live in the mind; they live in the body. Tight hips, a rigid spine, chronic pain; these are not just physical issues. They're often signs of emotional or energetic stagnation stored in your tissues.
  • Emotional and Mental Patterns
Negative thought loops, self-doubt, old wounds; these create mental congestion. Kundalini is subtle. It needs space to move. A mind cluttered with fear and old programming can block the flow like static blocks a clear radio signal.
  • Ego Attachments and Spiritual Burnout
Sometimes we push too hard spiritually, chasing “results,” trying to ascend past our pain instead of sitting with it. The ego wants control, and Kundalini doesn’t play by those rules. Attachment to identity, success, or even spiritual achievement can become its own kind of cage.

A Personal Note: When the Energy Stops

Let me step out of the teacher role for a second and just speak from where I’m at, because lately, my own energy has felt blocked, stuck, almost silent.

I’ve been struggling physically. Movement feels like a chore. I finally went to the doctor, and it turns out my hips are incredibly tight; so tight that the physical therapist was surprised I wasn’t in pain. And honestly? That made sense. I hadn’t felt much of anything in my body for a while.

Once I started physical therapy, something shifted. The work was small, simple stretches, breath, presence; but I noticed my Kundalini started to stir again. Nothing dramatic. Just… movement. A gentle hum I hadn’t felt in months.

I’ll be real, I haven’t been meditating like I know I should. I was avoiding it. Avoiding what I’d find if I got quiet enough to listen. Because some of the things rising in me are hard. They’re messy. And part of me wanted to pretend that if I didn’t sit with them, maybe they’d stay quiet.

But that’s not how this works.

My body shut down to get my attention. My soul was trying to lead, but my mind wanted to push through. And that push led to shutdown. It wasn’t punishment, it was protection. It was a message.

And if you’ve been feeling something similar? You’re not alone. Sometimes stillness is the healing. Sometimes the block is the teacher.

How to Support the Flow Again

You can’t force Kundalini to rise. But you can create space for it to move. These aren’t quick fixes. They’re practices. And the key word here is practice, not performance.

Meditation and Mindfulness

You don’t need an hour on a mountaintop. Five minutes of breath and honesty will do. Just sit. Be with yourself. Let the energy be what it is.
  • Gentle Movement
Stretch. Walk. Breathe into your hips. Kundalini doesn’t always respond to force, but it does respond to presence.
  • Breathwork (Pranayama)
Try alternate nostril breathing, or simply focus on long, slow exhales. This tells your nervous system you’re safe. Safety is what allows energy to move.
  • Emotional Honesty
Journal. Talk. Cry. Scream into a pillow if you need to. Release is not always pretty, but it is sacred.
  • Rest
Sometimes, you need to stop. Not forever, but long enough to let your body and soul catch up to each other. Integration is part of the path.

Final Thoughts

Kundalini isn’t a one-way road to enlightenment. It’s a cycle of opening, clearing, resting, and rising. If you’re in a quiet phase right now, trust it. This doesn’t mean you’re blocked forever. It just means something deeper is happening.

Be honest with yourself. Tend to your body. Stop trying to chase a feeling and start listening to what your energy is asking for.

And remember, awakening isn’t about escaping this world. It’s about learning how to fully be in it. Present. Clear. Alive.

Your Kundalini didn’t abandon you. It’s waiting for you to show up.
